Innovative Stem, CPower Partnership Generates Energy Innovation Award for California State University, Dominguez Hills

BALTIMORE and MILLBRAE, Calif.March 7, 2018, /PRNewswire/ — When CPower Energy Management and California-based Stem Inc. announced their partnership in 2017, they knew their leading-edge AI-powered energy storage + demand response program would pay dividends for customers. Neither company, though, anticipated that it would be award-winning. At least not so soon.

That changed on February 2, when Smart Energy Decisions announced that Stem-CPower customer California State University, Dominguez Hills, has been awarded their 2018 Innovation Award in the Customer Project/Onsite Renewable Energy category. Kenny Seeton, CSUDH’s Energy Manager, was recognized for his achievement at the Innovation Awards dinner at the 2018 Innovation Summit on Feb. 27, 2018, in Austin, TX. CPower’s Jason Babik, Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Business Development, and Stem’s Randy Palombi, Vice President of Sales, accepted the award for Mr. Seeton.

“I’m honored to receive this award on behalf of CSUDH’s energy programs,” Mr. Seeton said. “We have award-winning energy initiatives here at Dominguez Hills, and I’m very proud of the work my team has done to help shrink our campus’s environmental footprint. By integrating DERs (Distributed Energy Resources) like demand response and our 1-megawatt intelligent energy storage system into our efforts, we’ve broadened the scope of what energy management can contribute towards a greener campus.  Added with the fact that this extra revenue will be returned to the campus, and that this will help the state maintain a healthy grid at the same time, it’s definitely a win for everyone.”

CPower and Stem formed their strategic partnership last summer to offer enhanced demand management incentives to customers who combine energy storage and traditional demand response curtailment, which multiplies the kilowatt (kW) relief when the grid is stressed. Stacking innovative technology like energy storage with traditional demand response delivers even more demand relief to the grid. CSU Dominguez Hills—along with customers from other vertical markets including commercial real estate and big-box retail—is among the first to participate in this new program, demonstrating that energy storage and demand response can be a powerful combination to earn revenue, provide grid stability, and save energy.

California State University at Dominguez Hills will join Stem’s Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered energy storage network to automatically reduce onsite demand while helping the region’s grid capacity and higher reliance on renewable energy,” said John Carrington, CEO of Stem. “Congratulations to CSU-DH on well-deserved recognition for their sustainability and community leadership.”

“We applaud Kenny and CSUDH for this singular recognition. ‘Innovation’ is the perfect description of CSUDH’s advanced energy strategy,” said John Horton, CEO of CPower. “Stacking demand management resources like leading-edge energy storage technology and proven demand response curtailment measures provides a multiplication effect to deliver even more relief to the grid. Leveraging these two DER solutions is a powerful combination to earn revenue, provide grid stability, save energy, and promote sustainability. Expect to see this innovative approach adopted by more and more educational institutions and other vertical markets in the near future.”

California State University, Dominguez Hills will participate in traditional demand response curtailment on top of their demand management program using the intelligent energy storage system on campus. The curtailment plan will provide approximately 400 kW to relieve local grid constraints.
