Participants in PJM’s Capacity Programs commit a certain amount of electricity they are able to curtail when the grid is stressed. When dispatched by PJM, participants reduce their electricity consumption and receive payment for the energy they didn’t use.

PJM Capacity Program Snapshot

The Capacity Program helps maintain grid reliability by calling emergency events which require customers to adjust their power consumption. Participants pick a fixed level of consumption (“Firm Service Level” or FSL), and will not consume more than that committed amount of electricity. Events generally happen on hot summer afternoons, and last 4 hours on average.
