Demand Response
Demand response programs can be offered by your local utility or your energy market’s grid operator. While demand response programs vary from utility to utility and from market to market, they essentially fall into three types: capacity, ancillary, or economic. All three types of programs are discussed in more detail on this page.

Capacity Programs
Capacity programs are the backbone of demand response. They help create long-term grid stability by paying organizations to be on reserve to curtail their electrical load when called upon by the grid operator to relieve stress when the demand for electricity outpaces the grid’s ability to supply it.
With capacity programs, the grid operator is essentially creating an electricity reserve to be called on during the few times each year when the electric demand exceeds supply.

Economic Programs
Participants are notified when wholesale electricity prices are high and reduce their electric consumption, thereby minimizing the impact of price spikes, reducing the need for expensive capacity generation, and helping keep prices stable in the market.
Economic demand response participants also have the potential to significantly save on energy costs due to reduced consumption during these periods of high electricity prices.

Ancillary Services
When these unforeseeable circumstances take place, ancillary services can be called to quickly restore balance to the grid.
Ancillary service demand response programs pay organizations to be on call to make quick energy reductions in response to sudden, short-term grid instability. They are similar to capacity programs, with the exception that participating organizations must respond and curtail within short notice of being called on by the grid operator, typically within 10-30 minutes.

Demand Management
Demand management programs are similar to demand response programs in that they involve an organization reducing its energy. Unlike demand response programs, the participating organization is not responding to grid stress or volatile energy prices. Rather, the organization is reducing its demand–the maximum amount of electricity it consumes at a given time–in a way that saves the organization money and helps improve the grid.

Peak Demand Management
Capacity charges vary by the market, but can often account for 20-40% of an organization’s electricity bill.
Peak demand management programs enable an organization to lower its capacity charges by curtailing their energy load when the overall demand on the grid is at its highest.

Energy Efficiency
In some markets, the amount of energy saved as a result of energy efficiency improvements can be offered into a forward capacity auction (whereby the grid operator procures the capacity it forecasts it will need in the future) thus creating potential revenue for the participating organization.

Distributed Energy Resources
Unlike conventional power plants, which typically require the electricity they generate to be transmitted over long distances, DER systems tend to be closer to the load they serve. For this reason, DERs offer more flexible resources than those generated by centralized power stations.
